Halfords Clear Plastic Pre-Primer 300ml

The Halfords Clear Plastic Pre-Primer (300ml) is a specialist pre-primer designed to help primers and paint adhere to plastic surfaces.

Without the use of a specialised plastic primer, standard colour coats and primers can slip right off plastic surfaces. This handy pre-primer helps them to adhere fully to your plastic surfaces, to give you the best results. The can has a fan nozzle to make application easy, and the primer is compatible with all Halfords gloss and metallic paints and lacquers.

Preparing for Primer
Before starting the repair, clean the panel with a lint free cloth and a suitable surface cleaner or degreaser.

Ensure that the surface is clean, solid, and smooth by repairing any damage with plastic fillers. You can then sand the area with the correct dry sanding abrasives. Work up in stages from a coarser abrasive like a P80, P180, or P320 sandpaper to remove the bulk, then up to a much finer P500 sand to remove the sanding marks. Lightly sand all remaining plastic surfaces with P600 grit sandpaper to give better adhesion for the clear plastic primer.

Once the area is fully prepared, take a tack cloth and remove any dust or contaminants from the surface of the panel. Use a quality masking tape and masking paper to fully mask off the vehicle, leaving the area to be primed exposed.

Priming
Shake the primer for 2 minutes once the agitator ball inside is heard and apply a first thin “dust” coat to give best possible adhesion. Hold the can around 25-30cm from the panel, press the nozzle and move the can in a smooth side-to-side motion.

Apply one further thin coat to the panel to create a uniform thickness and coverage.

Once the plastic primer is fully cured, there is no need to sand it back. Doing so will quickly break through the primer and remove the adhesion-promoting properties. Instead, just directly overpaint the plastic primer with a normal coloured primer of your choice.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
  • Store can at room temperature before use
  • The icons on the side of the can give you quick instructions on things like working temperature and drying times
  • Ensure you read the complete instructions and familiarise yourself with each step, and make sure you have all consumables you need to hand before you start to paint.
  • For detailed instructions see back of can
  • Avoid spraying in direct sunshine, cold, damp, humid or windy weather
  • Optimum ambient temperature is between +10 - +25
  • Once you’re done, spray the can upside down for 5 seconds to clean the nozzle
CAUTIONS
*The drying time can change depending on the ambient temperature, humidity and the thickness of the coats applied. Ensure the paint is fully dry before moving onto the next stage.
