Choosing the right camping gas

It's essential to check which type of gas canister your camping stove - opens in a new tab requires before you buy, as different stoves are designed to work with specific gas types and canister sizes. When choosing camping gas, think about how you'll be using it, how long you'll be away, how many people you'll be cooking for and the size of your stove. A smaller canister may be enough for short trips, hot drinks and simple meals, while longer stays and family camping trips are likely to require a larger capacity option. Choosing the right gas canister helps ensure safe, reliable cooking and means you'll have enough fuel to keep meals, drinks and campsite essentials covered throughout your adventure.

Different types of camping gas

Choosing the right type of camping gas can help you get the best performance from your stove, especially in different weather conditions.

• Butane is a popular choice for camping and festival trips in milder temperatures, making it well suited to spring and summer use.

• Propane performs more effectively in colder weather, making it a reliable option for winter camping and year-round outdoor adventures.

• Isobutane offers a balance between the two, providing improved cold-weather performance while remaining lightweight and portable.

• Many camping gas canisters also use a butane-propane gas mixture, combining the benefits of both gases for dependable cooking across a wider range of conditions. Before choosing a canister, always check your stove's compatibility and consider when and where you'll be using it to ensure you have the right fuel for your trip.

Camping gas safety tips

• Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your camping stove, gas canister and other equipment to ensure safe use and correct operation.

• Never use a camping stove inside a tent, awning or enclosed space. Camping stoves should only be used outdoors to reduce the risk of fire and dangerous carbon monoxide build-up.

• Use camping gas equipment in a well-ventilated area and position your stove on a stable, level surface away from flammable materials.

• Keep gas canisters away from heat sources, naked flames and direct sunlight when not in use, and store them in a cool, dry place.

• Do not use damaged, rusted or leaking gas canisters. If you suspect a leak, stop using the equipment immediately and replace the canister safely.

• Always turn off your stove or appliance before changing a gas canister and allow the equipment to cool completely before handling.

• Check that your gas canister is compatible with your camping stove before use, as different stoves are designed for specific canister types and connections.

• Inspect connections regularly to ensure canisters are fitted securely and there are no signs of damage or wear.
