How to fit cleats to cycling shoes
Line the cleat up with the bolt holes on the sole, whether that's a 2-bolt (SPD) or 3-bolt (SPD-SL) pattern, so it sits roughly under the ball of your foot. Start with the bolts loose so you can adjust the angle, clip in a few times to check it feels natural, then tighten fully.
Can you ride a road bike without cleats
Yes. You can ride any road bike on flat pedals with ordinary trainers, which is exactly what plenty of riders do, especially when starting out. Cleats add efficiency by keeping your foot connected through the pedal stroke, but they're an upgrade rather than a must-have.
Are all cycling shoes compatible with cleats
Not all of them. It depends on the bolt pattern on the sole. Road shoes are usually 3-bolt (SPD-SL), while mountain bike and commuter shoes tend to be 2-bolt (SPD), and some take both. Casual shoes may not be cleat-compatible at all, so it's worth checking before you buy.
