Halfords Etch Primer 500ml

The Halfords Etch Primer (500ml) is a premium car primer, formulated to offer excellent adhesion to bare steel, aluminium, zinc & galvanised surfaces. It offers high levels of coverage, and dries quickly for faster repairs.

This primer can be used on steel, aluminium, fibreglass, body fillers and existing paint and bodywork to prep them for more paint. It can also be used on most well-prepared wood, stone, and plastic surfaces (as long as you use a specialised plastic pre-primer first).

It can be used with all Halfords gloss and metallic paints and lacquers, and it’s temperature-resistant to 110°C once fully hardened.

Preparing for Primer
Before starting the repair, clean the panel with a lint free cloth and a suitable surface cleaner or degreaser.

Use a suitable abrasive paper, wire wheels, or similar to make sure the bare surface is solid and as rust free as possible.

Once the area is fully prepared, clean the panel again, then take a tack cloth and remove any dust or contaminants on the panel. Use a quality masking tape and masking paper to fully mask off the vehicle, leaving the area to be primed exposed.

Note: This primer is designed to bond to bare aluminium, steel, zinc, and galvanised surfaces. Painting over existing primer or paint may cause adhesion issues.

Priming
Shake the primer for 2 minutes, until you hear the agitator ball inside, then apply a first thin “dust” coat to give best possible adhesion.

Holding the can around 25-30cm from the panel, press the nozzle and move the can in a smooth side-to-side motion.

Allowing time in-between coats, slowly build up the layers of paint until you see a uniform thickness and coverage (around 2-3 coats).

Once fully dry, you can use a suitable filler where needed. Fill and sand the area with the correct dry sanding abrasives. Work up in stages from a coarser abrasive like a P180 or P320 sandpaper to remove the bulk, then up to a much finer P500 sand to remove the sanding marks. You can then apply a normal primer, then colour paint.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
  • Store can at room temperature before use
  • Avoid spraying in direct sunshine, cold, damp, humid or windy weather
  • For detailed instructions see back of can
  • Optimum ambient temperature is between +10 - +25
  • Shake for 3 minutes
  • Once you’re done, spray the can upside down for 5 seconds to clean the nozzle
CAUTIONS:
*The drying time can change depending on the ambient temperature, humidity and the thickness of the coats applied. Ensure the paint is fully dry before moving onto the next stage.
Take care when preparing older paint surfaces (pre-1970) as these may contain harmful lead.
Make sure you have enough ventilation in the area you’re painting in to prevent a harmful build-up of solvent gasses.
