Lambda sensors are electronic devices that monitor and manage the oxygen levels of the exhaust gas. Commonly referred to as oxygen sensors, they’re a vital part of modern engines, as they make your car run efficiently and reduce emissions. Lambda sensors are in the vehicle’s exhaust system. Usually, there are one or more sensors before and after your engine’s catalytic converter.

Buying the correct Lambda sensor for your vehicle is simple with our lookup tool. Alternatively, you can head to your local Halfords store, where one of our friendly colleagues will gladly lend a hand.

What is a Lambda Sensor?

Lambda sensors are also referred to as oxygen sensors to many. Like a clever computer, these sensors monitor the oxygen levels in a vehicle’s exhaust gases. They measure the amount of oxygen and provide this information to the engine control unit (ECU). This data is vital for the ECU to adjust the air-fuel mixture, ensuring efficient combustion and minimising harmful emissions.

Why should you replace your Lambda Sensor?

Doing so prevents potential issues with your car’s catalytic converter. A catalytic converter transforms harmful elements like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides into less harmful substances, making your vehicle more environmentally friendly. A damaged Lambda Sensor can also cause high fuel consumption, poor engine performance, and increased exhaust emissions, all of which can put you out of pocket.

DPF Sensors

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) sensors are parts of diesel-powered vehicles that monitor and manage the efficiency of the car’s DPF system. A DPS system has a different job to a DPF sensor. They capture and reduce matter from the exhaust. Whereas a DPF sensor ensures the DPF system works efficiently.

Lambda Sensor FAQs

If your Lambda Sensor is faulty, your vehicle constantly circulates a rich mixture. This leads to increased fuel consumption and puts other elements of the emission control system at risk.

Oxygen Sensors are also known as Lambda Sensors, so they’re the same.

Lambda sensors monitor your engine’s air-to-fuel ratio by measuring the oxygen needed to oxidise any remaining combustibles in the exhaust gas.

We don’t advise driving with a damaged Lambda Sensor. That’s because there are many risks, such as increased emissions and reduced fuel efficiency. For specialist guidance, visit one of our stores and chat with one of our friendly team members. We’re always happy to help.
