Q. Which bike rack will fit my car?

There are three main types of cycle carrier: rear-mounted, roof-mounted and tow bar-mounted. Not all types are suitable for all cars, so it’s important to check compatibility before you buy. To do this, simply enter your vehicle registration number in our online checker. You’ll then only be shown cycle carriers that will fit your make and model of car.

Q. How do I choose the best bike rack for me?

We stock a range of makes and models of bike racks. Here are some key points to consider when making a decision about which rack to buy: • Compatibility with your car (you can check compatibility by entering your vehicle registration number here). • How many bikes you want to carry and what type they are. • Whether you still need access to your boot. • Whether you’d also like to be able to use a roof box and therefore need to leave space for that. Q. How do I fit a bike rack?

All of our bike racks come with step-by-step installation instructions included in the box. We’ve also produced ‘How To’ fitting videos for a number of our bike racks, which you can find here. If you’d like a hand with fitting your bike rack, then you can either choose the fitting option during the checkout process or pop into your local Halfords store and one of our colleagues will be happy to help.

Q. How do I put a bike on a bike rack?

The process will differ depending on what type of bike rack you’ve purchased. Step-by-step instructions for safely attaching your bike to your bike rack should be included in the box.

Q. How do tow bar-mounted bike racks work?

Tow bar-mounted bike racks attach to the back of your car via a tow bar. They’re the easiest option when it comes to loading and unloading, they can generally carry up to four bikes, and many are also compatible with e-bikes. If your car doesn’t have a tow bar, then you’ll need to get one installed before you can use this type of bike rack. We offer tow bar fitting at Halfords and you find out more about the service and how to book an appointment here.

Q. Is there a speed limit when I’m using a bike rack?

All of our rear roof and towbar-mounted carriers have been tested up to 80mph or 130kmh. This means that it's safe to drive to the national speed limit with these attached, but remember to take care in high winds.

Q. Can I carry my e-bike on a bike rack?

E-bikes tend to be heavier than mechanical bikes (around 20kg) and only certain cycle carriers can support them. These are typically tow bar-mounted ones and you can find a full list of e-bike compatible bike racks here.

Q. Which bike rack should I use for a BMX?

Using a rear-mounted bike rack is probably the easiest and most convenient way to transport a BMX. Put one arm of the bike rack through the frame of the BMX, where the down tube and crossbar meet below the stem, and put the second arm through the rear wheel (preferably holding onto the rear stay). Then make sure you secure the bike with straps and that it’s mounted on foam cushions.
